Step it Up for People-Powered Politics
Thu Apr 10, 2008 at 07:20:42 PM PDT
Recently fellow blogger Eddie in ME alerted me to a situation in Maine in which Rita Moran, the Kennebec County Democratic Committee chair, got kicked out of her elected position as DNC Women by establishment trickery.
Here in the netroots we pride our selfs in being part of the people-powered politics movement but this is the time when we need to step it up and take action on behalf of people-powered politics! In this essay I'll try to give a brief of what happened and how we can take action!
Maine's DNC Woman ousted by Clintonites- now what?

(I know this is a local story... but it's also nationally relevant. I'd gladly take recs. Thanks!)
I've received no less than five e-mails about the matter, and more phone calls than that. Will I tell you what happened? Sure, but I'm not going to be the one whining and crying about it. Rita Moran will not be attempting to contest the DNC election in the same manner as Jennifer DeChant did. It's over. She has the seat, and eventually, someone has to be the bigger person. That bigger person is Rita, and that's why I admire her so much.
Am I outraged? You bet I am. And I hope you are too. The progressives, long a minority of the State Committee, faced off against the old guard, the conservatives, the Clintonites, and a smattering of others who joined up for various reasons. The progressives stayed united, but our numbers were too small... and we lost.
So what next?
Ever wanted to influence a superdelegate? (w/ poll)

Well... now's your chance. We here in Maine have a bit of a choice to make, and our DNC Woman wants your opinion. So if you have an opinion about how superdelegates should vote, then come below the fold and make your choice heard.
Consider this an opportunity to make your vote count WAY more than it would otherwise...

Rita Moran, Kennebec County Democratic Committee chair, was elected to the Democratic National Committee in a squeaker of a vote at the State Committee meeting held in Augusta today.
As DNC Committeewoman, she represents one of our four votes at the national level. There is quite the amazing story to be told about this woman, and about the process that got her elected... please join me below the fold.

While the blogosphere has been well aware of the smear campaign launched by the so-called Maine Christian Civic League against both the chair and the vice-chair of the Kennebec County Dems, it hasn't yet hit the newspapers...until today.
